The Public Commission to Protect the Legacy of Andrei Sakharov
The Public Commission was formed in 1990 through the initiative of Yelena Bonner. The group oversees both the Sakharov Center and the Sakharov Archives. A Management committee is selected from the members of the group to govern the day-to-day work of the Sakharov Center.
Vyacheslav Bakhmin – Chairman of the Management committee. Participated in the dissident human rights movement in the USSR, helped organize the Commission to Investigate Political Abuse of Psychiatry (1977) and was consequently imprisoned, member of the Moscow Helsinki Group, led the Department of International, Humanitarian, and Cultural Cooperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991-1995). Currently a consultant for the Charles Steward Mott Foundation and the Chairman of the Expert board of the Polytechnic Museum. |
Leonid Litinski – Deputy Chairman of the Management committee, PhD in physics/mathematics, senior research fellow, director of dynamic neural network research at the System Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. |
Anatoli Shabad – Deputy Chairman of the Management committee, Dr. Hab. in physics/mathematics, principle research fellow of the Theoretical physics department at the P.N. Lebedev Institute of Physics in the Russian Academy of Sciences. Academician Sakharov’s authorized representative for 1989 People’s Deputies election campaign. People’s Deputy and Deputy of the 1st State Duma. |
Svetlana Gannushkina – Chairperson of the Civic Assistance Committee, member of the Manafement board of “The Memorial” society. |
